Born on October 31, 1950, in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, Zaha Hadid grew up in a vibrant city that was home to some of the finest examples of Eastern architecture. Encouraged by her family, she began practicing calligraphy and painting from an early age. By the age of ten, she was already designing her own clothes, decorating the walls of her bedroom, and creating many of her personal belongings. One habit remained with her throughout her life: wherever she went, she always carried a sketchbook and a pen.

Since childhood, Hadid had an extraordinary ability to mentally capture the objects she encountered as though photographing them with her eyes. She would then translate the abstract impressions they left on her mind into expressive sketches. These “superfluid” drawings eventually became the foundation of her professional journey into the world of design.

The Architect of the “Impossible”

Mathematics was always at the heart of Zaha Hadid’s thinking. She believed that numbers, much like musical notes, could be combined to create captivating compositions. In her imaginative architectural universe, science and design were inseparable. The flowing curves, spirals, and organic forms that became hallmarks of her architecture were direct expressions of her passion for mathematics.

Seeing herself as inseparable from the world of mathematical theory, Hadid chose to study Mathematics at the American University of Beirut for her undergraduate education. She later pursued architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. The uniqueness of her architectural language emerged from her ability to merge these two disciplines into a single creative vision.

Throughout her career, Hadid embraced the philosophy: “If a circle has 360 degrees, why limit ourselves to just one?” Although many of her early designs were dismissed by the architectural community as “impossible to build,” her use of advanced mathematical principles, including concepts inspired by Gaussian geometry, demonstrated how closely her visionary ideas were connected to structural reality.

Over the course of her career, Hadid received numerous prestigious honors, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize—often regarded as the Nobel Prize of architecture—as well as the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art and the Thomas Jefferson Medal.

Iconic Buildings Designed by Zaha Hadid

Vitra Fire Station – Weil am Rhein, Germany

Influenced by the Russian avant-garde during her studies at London’s Architectural Association, Zaha Hadid completed her first realized architectural project with the Vitra Fire Station in 1993.

Characterized by sharp angular forms and constructed primarily from exposed concrete, the building eliminates conventional architectural boundaries, making elements such as the roof appear as continuous extensions of the walls and ground plane. Today, the building serves as a museum exhibiting Vitra’s chair collection, and it remains historically significant as the first completed work of Zaha Hadid’s architectural career.

Galaxy SOHO – Beijing, China

Among Hadid’s most recognizable works, Galaxy SOHO is celebrated for its futuristic spatial composition, where voids become an integral part of the architectural experience.

The striking white complex features interconnected flowing forms inspired by the geometry of beehives. Reaching a maximum height of 67 meters, the building demonstrates Hadid’s signature approach of dissolving traditional architectural boundaries through continuous, organic geometry.

Riverside Museum – Glasgow, Scotland

The Riverside Museum holds special significance as Zaha Hadid’s first completed project within the United Kingdom after becoming a British citizen.

Its dramatic glass and steel façade pays tribute to Glasgow’s historic shipbuilding industry. Completed in 2011, the museum’s sweeping interior forms are enhanced by integrated LED lighting, emphasizing the continuity of its flowing architectural lines and reinforcing the dynamic movement that defines Hadid’s design philosophy.
